Pussy Interview on BattleHelm.com

PUSSY are in no way a new band. They are actually pretty much as old as I am, if not older. That apart I had not even heard of them until I came upon them on MySpace. With a name like PUSSY I knew I had to interview them. Anders Ekdahl ©2012 for BattleHelm.com  The following in a excerpt, the whole interview can be found here.

To me Jerusalem and in the extension Pussy were completely unheard of. The only Jerusalem I knew of was the Swedish one. Give all of us infidels a brief run through?

-The Swedish Jerusalem appeared about 3 years after we disbanded and were basically a Christian Rock Band. Our Jerusalem, although in the midst of what was then Heavy Rock, was very different from the mainstream rock bands. What people say now is that we were years before out time, we were playing a form of Metal, Doom, Stoner etc., years before they became recognised/successful genres. We played throughout the UK and parts of Europe, mainly Germany and the large Rock Festivals in Europe. Most of the press and the public at the time did not really understand what we were doing, which is why to an extent we became more of a cult band with very little media exposure.   [Read more…]

New releases from Rockadrome now available!

Two new releases from the Rockadrome label are now available in our shop at www.rockadromestore.com

Pussy Invasion CDPussy – Invasion CD (ROCK040-V-2). Collection of tracks from this early 70s post-Jerusalem UK hard rock group also managed and produced by Ian Gillan (Deep Purple). Includes songs from their lone single for the Deram label plus 14 other previously unreleased recordings!

The band was formed immediately after the break-up of Jerusalem by its founding members Paul Dean & Ray Sparrow along with Bob Cooke, who was eventually replaced by Brian Goff. They made the decision not to continue with the name Jerusalem out of respect for what Jerusalem was all about at that time in musical history, after all Jerusalem was a one-off moment in time creation and could never be recreated. Although the musical direction of Pussy was very different to Jerusalem, which is surprising as Paul was the main writer for both bands (although his liking for riffs is still prominent in places), they continued to keep that raw, no rules edge which set them apart from many of the bands of the period

Gillan was far more proactive with Pussy and was actually responsible for many backing vocals on the songs (also played piano on Feline Woman version 2, some percussion and came up with the idea for ‘Place in the Sky’). Pussy were a good-time band with no pretensions of being super musicians or technical geniuses. If it seemed like fun it was worth a try, which explains a lot about their sound and direction. On stage anything could happen, no rules of course! They gigged all over the UK and Germany as a main and support act, very much in the same way as Jerusalem had done.

After the disbanding of Jerusalem – (the rumors over the years said there was a second unreleased Jerusalem album – this is not true – it was actually the Pussy album) – Decca (Deram Label) decided to continue the Jerusalem contract for Pussy. The first and only Pussy release on Deram was a single entitled ‘Feline Woman’. The recordings found here represent what was to be the Pussy debut album plus other various tracks all recorded between 1972 and 1973. Official U.S. release date is OCTOBER 11, 2011.

Billylee Janey No Saints CDBillylee Janey – No Saints Ringin’ the Bells CD (ROC037-2).  Latest 2011 classic rock and blues guitar release from legendary Iowa Rock Hall of Fame guitarist who has been bending strings since the late 60s and released his first single in the early 70s with his hard rock band, Truth and Janey. Billylee stretches out here with a wonderful collection of 17 tracks including several extended classic blues rock guitar jams and an enduring variety of songs that even further showcase his tremendous talent and style. This is his fourth solo release for the Rockadrome label and another strong album that anyone and everyone who digs classic rock guitar and blues should be checking out. Official U.S. release date is OCTOBER 11, 2011.

Jerusalem interview on It’s Psychedelic Baby blog

Jerusalem bassist Paul Dean was interviewed recently for the It’s Psychedelic Baby blog site. Read on as Paul touches on the early years of the band, it’s origins, touring, the infamous artwork, post-Jerusalem group Pussy and more.

Interview: http://psychedelicbaby.blogspot.com/2011/03/jerusalem-my-interview-with-paul-dean.html

1. When and how was band Jerusalem formed?

In 1967 when Ray and I were 16 and still at school we went to see John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers and were absolutely blown away with a form of music we had never heard before. The next day we decided to form a band along with another friend Chris Skelcher. None of us had ever played an instrument before, Ray took drums, Chris guitar and I took bass and vocals.

2. Can you tell me about the early years when you just started your band?

None of us had any major influences, so we actually learnt how to play as we went along. I started writing as we decided we didn’t want to do any covers and liked the idea of creating something of our own that was a bit different. We practised at every opportunity and did part time and holiday jobs to pay for equipment. Our only focus was the band. Hardwork, but well worth it in the end.

3. Before Jerusalem, were you or other band members in any other bands? Any releases (45,tape..) from then?

No, none of us had ever touched an instrument before or had done anything musical. Even when Ray and I brought in Bill, Phil, Bob and Lynden at different times, none of them had actually been in another proper band. All performing virgins. The first recording we ever did was when Ian brought Roger Glover to Salisbury to do some recording on Rogers newly acquired Revox 2 track. Don’t know what happened to the tapes. Phil was the singer at this time.
